CompEx Instructor and Assessor Spotlight – Steven Lee

As part of our series of case studies, we spoke to Steven Lee from Assets Training & Technical Services (ATTS) in Singapore, who has recently qualified as a CompEx instructor and assessor, to find out more about his career journey and the rewarding nature of the role.

What is your experience in the industry?

I have worked in the marine, oil, gas, and system integration automation industry for over 35 years with a proven track record of overseeing all phases of electrical installation, maintenance, and repair. During this time, I have been responsible for testing a wide range of electrical equipment for marine, offshore and industrial customers, ensuring work is carried out following procedural and safety standard requirements.

I believe in the importance of education and have been actively involved in training several onsite crews and delivering competency training. I’ve also provided training and development for technical personnel involved in the preservation, installation and inspection of Explosion Protected Equipment used in FPSO and FSO vessels.

What made you want to become a CompEx Instructor/Assessor? How long have you been one?

I have always been passionate about helping others to learn and develop their skills, as such, becoming an instructor was a natural progression. After completing my qualifications and becoming a certified CompEx instructor and assessor this September (2023), I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment and have had the chance to meet new people from many different backgrounds and cultures. In my role, I’m not only able to share the knowledge and expertise I’ve gained over the last three decades but also make a real difference to the safety of others whilst giving back to the industry.

What geographical areas do you operate in?

In my current position, I’m based at ATTS’s state-of-the-art facility in Singapore. ATTS was the first CompEx audited training facility in the region, established in 2004. The team here has almost 20 years of experience delivering CompEx certifications to provide the highest training and quality standards to our practitioners. Our business has grown to be among the largest in the Asia Pacific region to conduct CompEx training, with four international training centres successfully established in Singapore, South Korea, the Republic of China (Nantong & Qingdao) and Indonesia.

What are the most popular qualifications in your opinion? And why do you think they are the most sought-after?

In my experience, CompEx Gas and Vapours (Ex01 – Ex04) is the most popular qualification in my region. This qualification has been widely utilised by businesses on a project basis.

CompEx Gas and Vapours (Ex01 – Ex04) covers training for both physical installations and equipment inspections for electrical and instrumental technicians working with gas and vapours in potentially explosive atmospheres. In hazardous environments, every item of equipment plays an important role. Therefore, by equipping practitioners with the technical knowledge and understanding required to operate specialist equipment, candidates can work competently and effectively.

What would you say are the most rewarding parts of your role?

I find it very rewarding to watch individuals achieve their goals and grow in confidence. It’s evident that each newly-certified individual has improved their knowledge, skills and safety awareness and will go on to perform competently when working in potentially hazardous environments.

What are your personal highlights or successes that you’ve experienced in the role?

Throughout my career journey and experience as a CompEx certified instructor and assessor, I have learned to take pride in my work and set a good example for practitioners. Sometimes, this involves admitting when you are wrong and having the perseverance to fix it and keep moving forward. Additionally, as a trainer, I have been able to take time to understand individual practitioners’ situations and create an environment for them to achieve their goals.

What would you say to someone looking to become a new CompEx instructor and assessor?

Becoming a CompEx certified instructor and assessor is a truly rewarding experience, which allows you to give back to the industry and help people achieve their goals.

What would you say are the main factors that set CompEx apart from other accreditation bodies?

CompEx certifications typically involve both theoretical knowledge assessments and practical training. These unique practical assessments include hands-on exercises in simulated hazardous environments, which are exclusively held at CompEx approved training centres.

As part of CompEx’s international scheme for competency validation and certification, each centre undergoes an annual audit by the certifying body, providing businesses and practitioners with further confidence and trust in the quality of the scheme.
