Frequently Asked Questions

• CompEx (Competency in Explosive Atmospheres) is a globally recognised certification scheme that validates the competency of individuals working in potentially explosive or hazardous atmospheres.
• It's accredited to ISO/IEC 17024 and based on IEC 60079 and related standards.

• Start with the Ex Awareness (ExA) or Foundation (ExF) course, focusing on theoretical understanding of hazardous area basics.
• For hands-on skills, consider Foundation Plus (ExF+).
• For core practitioner skills, the Gas & Vapours (Ex01–Ex04 to Ex11) qualification is next, depending on the industry you work in.
• Please review the Competency Framework – click here.

• CompEx certificates are valid for five years.
• Before expiry, you must re-certify.
• If you still work regularly in hazardous areas and previously completed Ex01–Ex04, the Recognised Practitioners Programme (Ex01RPP–Ex04RPP) is a shorter refresher. Otherwise, retaking the full five-day course may be necessary.

• The Recognised Practitioners Programme (RPP) includes 2–3 days of guided learning and assessment (online exam and practical tasks).
• Failure to recertify before expiry requires retaking the full qualification.

• Pre-course learning is highly recommended: use e-learning, course notes, self-evaluation quizzes, or the Knowledge Hub.
• Dedicate at least 20 hours per year to CPD via webinars, HSE updates, or industry reading.
