Maritime (Ex15-Ex16)

Installation, inspection and maintenance of Ex electrical equipment for the Maritime Industry

The CompEx Ex15-Ex16 Maritime qualification has been developed for individuals undertaking electrical installation, maintenance and inspection activities in maritime hazardous areas associated with ships using gases or other low-flashpoint fuels, including liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The use of these fuels introduces hazardous-area considerations associated with fuel storage, distribution and associated machinery, equipment and systems. The qualification provides a maritime-specific route for individuals who require competence in the installation, maintenance and inspection of Ex electrical equipment within these environments.

The qualification combines internationally recognised hazardous area principles and relevant IEC 60079 standards with the maritime requirements and safety principles established through SOLAS and the International Code of Safety for Ships using Gases or other Low-flashpoint Fuels (IGF Code). Candidates develop both underpinning knowledge and practical skills, with learning and assessment designed to reflect the application of Ex principles within realistic maritime environments.

Successful completion provides independent evidence that the candidate has demonstrated Core Competence within the defined scope of the qualification at the time of assessment.

The qualification is relevant to personnel working throughout the lifecycle of maritime assets, including new construction, commissioning, operation, inspection, maintenance and refurbishment.

What the qualification covers

  • Maritime legislation, codes and relevant Ex standards.
  • Hazardous area classification on vessels.
  • Ex equipment types, protection concepts, markings and certification.
  • Selection, installation and maintenance of Ex electrical equipment.
  • Inspection of Ex equipment and identification of defects.
  • Documentation, test results and fault reporting.

Who Should Attend?

This qualification is ideal for:

  • Marine Electricians
  • Electrical Technicians
  • Electrical Engineers
  • Shipbuilding Personnel
  • Ship Repair Personnel
  • Commissioning Engineers
  • Inspection Personnel
  • Maintenance Personnel
  • Technical Supervisors responsible for Ex electrical equipment

Eligibility Criteria

There are no mandatory qualification prerequisites for CompEx Ex15-Ex16 Maritime.

However, the qualification has been developed for people who possess, or are developing, relevant electrical knowledge and practical experience.

Candidates are strongly encouraged to have relevant industrial experience associated with electrical installation, inspection or maintenance before undertaking the qualification.

Previous experience of activities such as:

  • cable installation;
  • cable glanding;
  • cable termination;
  • inspection of Ex electrical equipment; and
  • maintenance of industrial electrical systems

will assist candidates when undertaking the practical learning and assessment activities.

These recommendations support candidate success and should not be interpreted as mandatory entry requirements.

Course Details

Duration:

  • Duration: 5 days
  • 3.5 days guided learning (theory: 15–20 hours; practical: 4–6 hours)
  • 1.5 days of assessment

    Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, candidates will be able to:

LO1: Identify relevant international standards and maritime legislation and their purpose relating to hazardous areas involving explosive gas atmospheres on vessels.

LO2: Identify how explosive gas atmospheres on vessels are classified, including how the properties of gases and vapours influence the zones and their extent.

LO3: Understand the different Ex certified equipment types of protection to identify the markings and certification suitable for explosive gas atmospheres on vessels.

LO4: Perform selection, installation and maintenance of Ex certified equipment in accordance with IEC standards.

LO5: Perform inspection of Ex certified equipment using inspection tables in accordance with IEC standards.

LO6: Accurately interpret documentation and test values for Ex equipment, ensuring compliance with safety requirements throughout installation, inspection and maintenance activities, including fault reporting.

    Assessment Process

    Online Theory Exam

    • 60 multiple-choice questions
    • 90 minutes

    Practical Assessments

Candidates demonstrate their ability to safely apply the knowledge and practical skills developed during the programme through structured practical assessment activities.

Practical assessment covers the requirements associated with both:

    • Ex15 – Installation and Maintenance; and
    • Ex16 – Inspection.

Assessment activities are designed to represent the application of knowledge and skills within hazardous area environments.

    Certification

Successful candidates will receive the internationally recognised CompEx Certificate in Core Competence, valid for 5 years.
