Dust (Ex05 – Ex06)
Installation, inspection and maintenance of Ex electrical equipment where dust is present
This qualification is designed for electrical and instrumentation personnel working in hazardous areas where combustible dust, fibres, or flyings may create explosive atmospheres
By completing this course, participants will develop both theoretical understanding and practical competence in the safe installation, inspection, and maintenance of Ex equipment in dust-prone environments.

Who Should Attend?
This course is ideal for:
- Practicing electrician or instrumentation technician.
- Individuals involved in the installation, inspection, and maintenance of Ex equipment in dust hazard areas
- Engineers with prior experience in Ex environments
Eligibility Criteria
To enrol in this course, you should be:
- A competent, practicing electrician, instrumentation technician or similar technical role.
- An engineer with relevant field experience in hazardous area installations
Course Details
Duration:
- Total Duration: 3 days
- 1.5 days of guided learning (theory + practical)
- 1.5 days of assessment
Learning Format:
The course includes:
- Theoretical training: 6–8 hours
- Practical training: 2–4 hours
- Practical and theory-based assessments over the final 1.5 days
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, candidates will be able to:
- Identify relevant IEC standards, directives, national regulations and guidance relating to hazardous areas involving explosive dust atmospheres.
- Identify how explosive dust atmospheres are classified, including how the properties of combustible dust influences the zones and their extent.
- Demonstrate knowledge of non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe types of protection, Ex certification and marking suitable for explosive dust atmospheres, including: Ex ‘t’ equipment, Ex ‘i’ and other relevant methods.
- Perform selection and installation of non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment in accordance with IEC standards.
- Perform inspection and maintenance of non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment using inspection tables in accordance with IEC standards.
- Accurately interpret documentation and test values for non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment, ensuring compliance with safety requirements throughout installation, inspection, maintenance activities, including fault reporting.
Assessment Process
Candidates are assessed via online theory exam and four practical assessments.
Online Examination:
- Format: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)
- Number of questions: 60
- Duration: 1.5 hours
Practical Assessments:
Candidates to complete practical assessments per unit:
-
Ex05 – Combined installation of (Non-IS and IS) Ex equipment: 3 hours 45 minutes
- Ex06 – Inspection & maintenance of non-IS equipment: 1 hour 20 minutes
- Ex06 – Inspection & maintenance of IS equipment: 65 minutes
Certification
