Water Treatment Facilities (Ex09 – Ex10)

Installation and inspection of Ex equipment for Water Treatment Facilities (Ex09-Ex10)

Developed in consultation with industry, the qualification is tailored for electrical and instrumentation professionals operating in water supply, wastewater, and water treatment environments where gases, vapours, or dust may present an explosion risk.

This two-unit qualification covers essential legal and safety practices required for working in hazardous environments and aligns with the standards set out in IEC 60079, WIMES 3.02D, and related national regulations.

On completion, candidates will be able to:

  • Understand legal obligations, relevant standards and regulations (e.g. IEC60079:14 & IEC60079:17, WIMES 3.02D)
  • Identify hazardous areas and the factors used to classify them
  • Read and interpret hazardous area certification, labelling and documentation
  • Understand methods of protection for Ex equipment (e.g. Ex ‘d’, ‘e’, ‘n’, ‘t’, ‘i’)
  • Install, inspect, and maintain Ex equipment safely in water sector environments

Who Should Attend?

This course is designed for those working in the water utilities industry such as:

  • Practicing electricians and instrumentation technicians
  • Individuals involved in the installation, inspection, and maintenance of Ex equipment in dust hazard areas
  • Electrical/instrument engineers with prior hands-on experience in hazardous areas

Eligibility Criteria

To enrol in this course, you should be:

  • A competent, practicing electrician, instrumentation technician or similar technical role
  • An engineer with relevant field experience in hazardous area installations

Course Details

Duration:

  • Total Duration: 5 days
  • Plus 4–6 hours of E-learning to be completed prior to attending

Delivery:
Face-to-face training at an Approved CompEx Centre

Learning Format:
The course includes:

  • 3 days of guided, in-person training
  • 2 days of formal assessments (theoretical and practical)

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, candidates will be able to:

  • Identify relevant IEC standards, directives, national regulations and specific industry guidance relating to hazardous areas involving explosive gas and dust atmospheres.
  • Identify how explosive atmospheres are classified, including how the properties of gases, vapours and combustible dust influences the zones and their extent.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe types of protection, Ex certification and marking suitable for explosive gas and dust atmospheres, including: Ex ‘d’, Ex ‘i’ and Ex ‘t’ equipment and other relevant methods.
  • Perform selection and installation of non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment in accordance with IEC standards.
  • Perform inspection and maintenance of non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment using inspection tables in accordance with IEC standards.
  • Accurately interpret documentation and test values for non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment, ensuring compliance with safety requirements throughout installation, inspection, maintenance activities, including fault reporting.

Assessment Process

Theory Assessment (Online Exam)

  • Duration: 1 hour 45 minutes
  • Format: 60 multiple-choice questions
  • 30 questions (Closed Book)
  • 30 questions (Open Book) using the CompEx Toolbox Guide

Practical Assessments:

  • Ex09: Safe preparation and installation of Ex ‘d’, ‘e’, ‘n’, ‘t’ and ‘i’ equipment in hazardous locations
  • Ex10: Inspection of the same types of Ex equipment in hazardous locations

Certification
